ABOUT THE CAMP: At V.I.B.E. camp, we will explore the arts in all forms – not just visual and performance arts, but also martial arts, culinary arts, and life skills, all rooted in creativity. This camp is all about helping kids build confidence, learn essential life skills, and discover the joy of creative expression. Whether we’re whipping up something tasty in the kitchen, honing basic skills, or creating masterpieces, we look forward to inspiring the next generation of young learners and artists!

ABOUT THE DIRECTORS: Hi, we are Dallas and Darian and we are so excited to be running this year’s V.I.B.E. Summer Kids Art Camp! With each of us having teaching experience, we’re passionate about helping kids grow through creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning.

We both bring unique skills and experiences to camp. Dallas has been teaching for six years in Regina, and also coaches martial arts, promoting a balanced approach to physical, mental, and creative development. Darian also has six years of teaching experience, including two years abroad in London, UK. We both have a passion for play-based learning and exploration, as well as the arts. We know our love for the arts will help create an engaging and fun environment for kids.

We can’t wait to see you at camp!

A celebration of the art of Roger Ing

A celebration of the art of Roger Ing

October 19 – November 10, 2023
Extended through Christmas.

The Club – 2431 8th Ave

Opening reception – Thursday, October 19th from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Video screening of Roger Ing’s Utopia documentary at 7:30 pm

Bring your own Roger Ing art for show and tell.

Roger Ing was born in a small village outside of Guangzhou, China in 1933. He immigrated to Canada in 1950, first working in his father’s restaurant in Regina. Later, he and his wife, Mei, opened the New Utopia Cafe where Ing did the majority of his artwork.

In his formative years, Ing learned the traditional bamboo brush painting style of art, which influenced much of his work. In Canada, he immersed himself in painting and studying with Ken Lochhead, one of the Regina Five artists, who introduced him to Abstract Expressionism. Ing developed his own style referring to it as “Rogerism” or “Roger Style.” Studio, gallery, restaurant: the New Utopia Cafe was one and the same for Ing for 23 years. When he wasn’t out front serving customers, he was in the back creating new Rogerisms of his favourite subjects: tigers, dancers, sunflowers, birds, nudes, Frankensteins, or Mona Lisas. When his restaurant was closed because of health code issues in the summer of 1993, he continued to work at home.

Over the years Ing had many exhibitions, including as a contributor of a Saskatchewan Arts Board show at the MacKenzie Gallery in 1962, as well as having solo exhibitions at The Bridge Gallery in 1993, Regina’s Albert Library in 1988 and 1989, plus several in the Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange Society Club Gallery in 1988, 1992, and 1996. In 1998 Ing had his first solo exhibition in a major gallery at the MacKenzie Art Gallery, in conjunction with a screening of a documentary Roger Ing’s Utopia about him and his work.

He became a culture-hero to many in Regina’s artistic communities and is remembered for his eclectic collection and unique style. Roger Ing died in Regina in 2008.

The artists gain valuable exposure to leading art professionals in Canada and abroad, as their portfolios are reviewed and judged by the jury, chaired by National Gallery of Canada’s Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Josée Drouin-Brisebois. The 2019 jury is composed of Peter Dykhuis, Director/Curator, Dalhousie Art Gallery, for the Atlantic Provinces; Jo-Ann Kane, Curator, National Bank Collection, for the Quebec region; Swapnaa Tamhane, Independent Curator, Artist, and Writer, for the Ontario region; Lindsey Sharman, Curator, Art Gallery of Alberta, for the Prairies and the North region; Nigel Prince, Executive Director, Contemporary Art Gallery, for the West Coast and Yukon; and international juror, Henriette Bretton-Meyer, Curator, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, Denmark.

“I am so proud of the 2019 Sobey Art Award jury for its work on a compelling and provocative longlist of Canadian artists,” said Drouin-Brisebois. “This year’s list is certain to stimulate curiosity and debate. Through its international residency program, exhibition of the finalists, and its cash prizes, the Sobey Art Award has an invigorating impact on the artists recognized by the jury for their innovation and creativity. The National Gallery is looking forward to partnering with the Art Gallery of Alberta to bring an inspiring exhibition for our first time to this part of the country.”

The five shortlisted artists will be announced June 12 and the international residencies recipients will be revealed on September 18. The Sobey Art Award finalists’ exhibition will be on view from October 5, 2019 to January 5, 2020 at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton. The grand prize winner of the 2019 Sobey Art Award will be announced at a gala held at the Art Gallery of Alberta on November 15, 2019. The Fogo Island Arts residency winner will be announced in the weeks following the gala.
