Spoken Word Poetry Workshops

Youth ages 13 to 21 are invited to a dynamic writing and performance workshop with artist in residence Zoey Roy. Zoey will teach youth how to share personal stories and experiences through spoken word poetry and performing. Stop by to check it out, bring an idea, and learn how you can transform your ideas.

Workshops are taking place in dates through May at Paved Arts in Saskatoon. Drop-in sessions are from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Registered classes run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Paved Arts is at 424 20th St. W and the workshops are being held in the event space on the second floor.

Got a story? Got a poem? Writing a memoir? Through a series of fun exercises, you’ll discover how the right words convey not only information, but also emotion and insight. This workshop is for writers of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry of all skill levels and takes place at the Eastend Library.

Barbara Klar has been writing professionally for nearly thirty years. She has published four books of poetry, most recently Cypress, a poetic meditation on the Cypress Hills. She has worked as a tree planter, camp cook, editor, workshop leader, and as a mentor for the Banff Centre’s Wired Writing Studio. She recently relocated from west-central Saskatchewan to Eastend.

Artists Required for Workshops

The Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange is looking for artists in all media –– including music, theatre, writing, dance, visual arts, and crafts –– in the Rivers West District for Sport, Culture, and Recreation to provide half-day art workshops in the district.

Artists will be paid the CARFAC rate of $325 per half-day workshop and will be reimbursed for supplies. The district stretches from Meadow Lake to Kyle and from the Alberta border to Borden. Find a district map here.

Recently Announced: Whale and the Wolf and More

The calendar for the next couple of months keeps filling out!

For one, we’re happy to join up with 104.9 The Wolf to host Whale and the Wolf in the Exchange on April 7. The great Edmonton, AB rock group played to a packed house here within the past year, and we’re happy to have them back along with locals Small City Blues and Dead Levee.

Zandra Productions are bringing New Jersey’s Senses Fail to the Exchange on May 24. The group’s been pounding out post-hardcore for over 15 years now, and with great touring support from Sharptooth and Lil Lotus, there’s no reason to miss this one.

A new album from Saskatchewan artists is always worth celebrating, and we’re particularly excited for the new one from Nick Faye and the Deputies in the Exchange on April 14. You’ll get to hear songs from Stumbling Distance while also getting the pleasure of A+ openers Andino Suns.

The folks at Regina Folk Festival always have good taste, proven once again by them having Donovan Woods in the Exchange April 29. The Ontario folk artist has a new album, Both Ways, out and it’s full of the stellar, well-crafted songs he’s become known for.

Dearly Anticipating the Dears

We’ve got a big stretch of Exchange Presents shows coming up, and we’re especially excited to have it kicked off by the Dears on March 17.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the group in Regina, but they’ve been keeping busy. The Montreal, QC band has been together for 20 years, touring and recording for labels like Arts and Crafts, MapleMusic, and, most recently, Paper Bag Records. Essentially, the husband-and-wife duo of Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak have seen it all when it comes to the Canadian music scene, all while refining a sound of their own.

The band can make anthemic indie-rock as well as they do post-punk tinged introspection, writing orchestral pop as well as they spin a tragic narrative. You can hear that most recently on their new album, Times Infinity Volume Two.

They’re in the Exchange with Lou Canon on March 17. Tickets are available at Vintage Vinyl, Madame Yes, and online at Ticketfly.

Going past that, we’re presenting a big number of shows that you won’t want to miss:
– Montreal’s Caveboy will be a dreamy indie-pop treat when they play the Club on March 19, and it’s a special show for us as Girls Rock Regina will be out to talk about this year’s camp. Anyone 14 or younger can come to the show for free.
– We won’t be dyeing any beer green –– we’ve got too much respect for any brew to do that –– but the Real McKenzies hitting the Exchange on March 20 is sure to be a festive occasion. (If “festive” means “nursing a killer hangover the next day” for some.)
– 104.9 The Wolf are always looking to bring rock to Regina and in early April, they’re pairing up with us to do that not once but twice. Look out for Whale and the Wolf on April 7 and the Wild! and the Lazys on April 11.
– Last but not least, Eddie Spaghetti’s coming back to the Exchange. We and Rebellion Brewing Co. are presenting the countrified road dogs the Supersuckers here on May 18.

Queen City Rocks. March 15 and 29. The Exchange.
It’s incredible to think how long 104.9 The Wolf’s long-running battle of the bands has been going, but not quite so impossible when you consider the wealth of Regina rock bands they have to draw from. These’ll be the final two dates of the year, including the Grand Finale on March 29. Tickets available from the bands or online at Ticketfly.

Sean Burns and Lost Country. March 16. The Club.
His latest album is called Music for Taverns, Bars, and Honky Tonks. On this particular night, it’ll be music for the Club when the Winnipeg-based artist joins up with new Regina roots act the Furriers. $10 at the door.

The Dears. March 17. The Exchange.

The Montreal trio are on of Canada’s most buzzed-about dreamy indie-pop groups. They’ve had music featured in shows like Orange Is the New Black, You’re the Worst, and Awkward and are on their way out to JUNOFest. $10 at the door.

Real McKenzies. March 20. The Exchange.
Bandleader Paul McKenzie is leading this Canadian Celtic punk group into our room a few days after St. Patrick’s. All the same, we expect tracks off their new album, Two Devils Will Talk, to spark some raw energy and drunken tradition in the room. w/ the Raygun Cowboys and Bats Out!. Tickets at Vintage Vinyl, Madame Yes, and online at Ticketfly.

Jory Nash. March 21. The Exchange.
The Toronto-based artist has eight albums to his credit, all showcasing his blend of folk, jazz, blues, pop, and soul. The independent Nash tours and creates relentlessly, with a new album coming up in the future. $17 at the door.

Reverend Horton Heat. March 22. The Exchange.
The good reverend is staying true to his evangelical calling, making us all the richer and “psychobillier” for getting to tag along. This packed bill is getting a lot of interest, so get out and grab your tickets soon. w/ Unknown Hinson and Igor and the Red Elvises. Tickets at Vintage Vinyl, Madame Yes, and online at Ticketfly.

Pass the Hat. March 23. The Club.
These mainstays of the Regina comedy scene don’t quit. Every month, standups get up in the Club for a packed house to deliver laughs on a budget. Pay what you want.

The Jam. March 25. The Club.
We’ve confirmed the next three dates for Regina’s only 19 and under monthly jam session, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to come out and join jammers of all experience levels. Free.

Call for 2018 Workshop Tour Artists

The Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange is looking for artists working in visual art, theatre, dance, music, and writing to be part of our annual Workshop Tour. Artists from across Canada are welcome to apply, but preference is given to Saskatchewan residents.

Each artist will teach four 50-minute workshops per day to students in schools across Saskatchewan. Successful applicants will have previous experience teaching workshops and working with youth from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

The tour runs through Saskatchewan from September 24 to October 31, with workshops happening during school hours Monday through Friday. Travel costs are covered by the organization. Artists are paid $325 per workshop day plus per diem. Number of dates on the tour ranges from 12 to 25 depending on school bookings. This is to be confirmed by June 30, 2018.

Please include the following in applications:
– A résumé
– A 50-minute workshop lesson plan, adjustable for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and made to accommodate classes of up to 25
– A budget for supplies, with 1,500 to 2,000 students in mind
– Two references

A valid driver’s license is required. Successful candidates will need to obtain a criminal record check prior to the tour.

About the Workshop Tour

Every fall, students get to learn directly from professional artists and experience artistic creation first hand with the Workshop Tour.

The tour assembles a group of working artists, sending them out for full days of giving workshops in their fields. With the Workshop Tour, the Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange strives to nurture independent thinking, the imagination, respect for one another, and enthusiasm for life through balanced programs integrating multiple forms of artistic activity.

What do schools get? One day, five artists, and 20 workshops.

Workshops are specifically tailored for any age group from elementary to high school. The program has long been referenced by artists who have chosen their profession in part due to early interaction with the Workshop Tour. It continues with the goal of encouraging the next generation of independent and creative thinkers.

The Exchange and Caveboy Welcome Girls Rock Regina

We’re excited to have Girls Rock Regina down to the Club on March 19 for Montreal’s Caveboy. Bringing out one of our favourite community groups to hang out while a great Canadian trio plays should be a blast and we’re allowing free entry for everyone 14 and under who might want to come talk to GRR.

GRR is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to empowerment of self-identified female, trans, two-spirit, and gender non-conforming youth and adults through collaborative music creation and performance. They’ll be on hand in the Club on March 19 to talk about their annual camp, registration for which runs until March 24. (Read more about them at their website.)

Caveboy are one of the nation’s most buzzed-about dreamy indie-pop groups. Michelle Bensimon, Isabelle Banos, and Lana Cooney have had their music featured in shows like Orange Is the New Black, You’re the Worst, and Awkward. They spent two weeks recording in Ireland last year, and will soon be on their way out to JUNOFest.

So if you’re 14 and under, come out to the Club on March 19 to see a fun band and learn more about Girls Rock Regina. And if you’re older than that, come out anyhow for a good time.
