Dead South Shows Getting Better and Better

We were ecstatic when the Exchange Presents and 104.9 The Wolf got to announce two nights of Regina’s own the Dead South in the Exchange. We’re even happier now that we get to share just how great each of these nights will be.

Each night still features a full headlining set from the world-touring, rocking bluegrass sensations. Now, we can tell you the great groups who’ll be joining the South.

On December 15, alt-country artist Kevin Roy will be coming in from Winnipeg, MB to play, along with roots band and country radio hour Wolf Willow. On December 16, Regina songwriter Étienne Fletcher opens, along with the heavy psych-country of Snake River.

Exchange’s Fall 2016 Coming Together

We’d already announced what for some could be a full slate of shows in the Exchange Presents series for fall 2016. Junior Boys on September 16; Castle on September 26; Fire Next Time on September 27; Tokyo Police Club in the Riddell Centre on September 28 –– and those are just the shows we’re putting on our ourselves, without including the many great performances coming up from outside presenters. (Have a look at our Events section for a full, up-to-date listing.)

This week, the Exchange Presents and 104.9 The Wolf have added three more, in case those weren’t enough for you. And they’re big ones, too. All tickets will be available soon at Vintage Vinyl, Madame Yes, and online at Ticketfly.

September 18 Club Show Cancelled

The Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange has decided to cancel the show previously booked by an outside presenter for the Club on September 18.
 
Artistic freedom has been a value for the organization over its decades-long history across the province.
 
In managing the Exchange and the Club, two Regina venues that self-sustain through outside bookings, our venues sometimes host artists who provoke thought and challenge audiences.
 
In this case, those values are superseded by this artist’s creative choice in the band name Black Pussy, which is appropriative and contributes to a culture of objectification of Black people, people of colour, and women.
 
The final decision was reached through a collective conversation within the organization. As an organization that strives to reflect and represent a province as vibrant and diverse as Saskatchewan, we felt it necessary to take the extraordinary step to cancel the show. It is our hope that this contributes in a small way to increased awareness on these important issues.
 
The feedback received on this issue is appreciated.

BreakOut West 2016 Lineup Announced

IMG_2411What are you doing this October? Well, let us tell you: you’re coming to BreakOut West 2016.

The festival, which annually precedes the Western Canadian Music Awards, is taking place in Regina October 14 and 15, 2016. Today, the lineup was announced in the Exchange, and what a lineup. After a performance from Saskatchewan’s own Blake Berglund, WCMA-nominated music supporters Susan Busse and Taron Cochrane read out the list, which included a wealth of Saskatchewan talent:

City of Regina Helps Shed Some Light in the Exchange

IMG_2377Patrons of the Exchange in late July were the first to see the latest improvement to Regina’s historic venue: a brand new lighting system. If the reviews that have come back from a few test runs are any indication, the rig is sure to improve the experience in the room for years to come, as well as open the space up to more kinds of performances.

The system was made possible by a New Initiatives grant from the City of Regina’s Community Investment Grants Program. Their initial investment allowed the Saskatchewan Cultural Exchange to upgrade over the decades-old previous system. The new lights open up the Exchange to new events, making the venue more suitable for a wider variety of music, theatre, and more, making the venue a greater asset to the community.

The Exchange Hits the Gateway Festival

The Exchange is happy to come back to the Gateway Festival in 2016! The festival is taking place from July 22 to 24 in Bengough, SK and, on the Saturday, we’ll be presenting the Pool Stage for the second year in a row. The daytime spot will hear performances from prairie musicians while audience members can lounge, float, and listen. (Yes, there actually is a pool!)

Castle Bring Classic Metal to the Club

The Exchange presents Castle in the Club on Monday, September 26.

The title of the group’s fourth album fits just about perfectly. Welcome to the Graveyard is a name that’s appropriately morbid and simply feels right for a style of metal that harkens back to the classics.

Led by vocalist Elizabeth Blackwell, the group administers doses of darkness, mixed in riff-centric metal that can’t be faulted. Powerful three pieces like this one can take over a room; expect them to do no less in the intimate Club.

Tokyo Police Club Are Coming Back

Zandra Productions and the Exchange present Tokyo Police Club in the Riddell Centre Multi-Purpose Room on Wednesday, September 28.

The group, formed in Newmarket, ON, have long been a staple of Regina live music calendars, from their days touring their first EP, 2006’s A Lesson in Crime, on. That recording and a wild in-concert experience earned them a reputation as one of Canada’s most frenetic and energetic indie-rock bands.

Fittingly, their latest material is being called something a return to that feel. They’ve embarked on a series of EPs called Melon Collie and the Infinite Radness that reclaims some of the vitality of their early material.

The night also features Ontario indie-roc bands Born Ruffians and the Elwins.

Junior Boys in September

The Exchange presents Junior Boys in the venue on Friday, September 16.

Hamilton, ON duo Matt Didemus and Jeremy Greenspan were there as a Canadian electronic pop scene came to true fruition, and have stayed the course ever since. Together, they make electronic music that still reaches for melancholy and real emotion.

Their latest album, Big Black Coat, came out in 2016 and was their record in five years. The rest served them well –– Exclaim! called it their “sleekest, sharpest, and most complicated to date.”

The night also features electronic artists Egyptrixx (Toronto, ON) and Borys (Edmonton, AB).

Black Wizard Around the Corner

The Exchange presents Black Thunder in the venue on Saturday, June 25.

When talking about the Vancouver, B.C. group’s latest, Exclaim! called it “their most fun and assured record yet,” a sign that they’re on the right path. Further good indications: spots on tour with heavyweights Red Fang and Bison.

They’re proving it all right with their music. You can hear it on their latest album, New Waste, out now on War on Music, or at their head-banging live shows.

The night also features Vancouver, B.C. stoner rock group Dead Quiet and Regina rock group Black Thunder.
